The UK's first ChessBoxing club opened this week in North London. The 90-minute training session was led by WCBO founder Iepe Rubingh and among the first ChessBoxing enthusiasts in the UK, MMA star Andy “Elvis” Costello stood out. Costello, who acheived a chess rating of 135 when he was just fourteen years old, sparred with GBCBO founder Tim Woolgar over seven rounds of ChessBoxing and clearly demonstrated his potential. Says Costello: “My chess background puts me in a strong position and I know my way around the ring. ChessBoxing is a sport I take very seriously and I'm working towards a championship bout later this year.” The club is based at the Islington Boxing Club, 20 Hazelville Road, London N19 3LP.  Classes run on Saturday from 12noon to 1.30pm.  Says Tim Woolgar: "The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.  It's is not only a great way to improve your chess and get fit at the same time, it's also a unique "adrenaline management" sport. ChessBoxing is an unforgettable experience."
